IOM FINAL SPRING EVENT RESULTS –SATURDAY 22 JULY – MANSFIELD HOLLOW SITE
Saturday was a hard fought battle through sun and rain, with target IOM winds mixed with some high winds. The first nine races were completed at 1:30, but going another nine races would have been a stretch. Fortunately or unfortunately my experimentation with Larry Clinton’s RUSH confirmed the designer’s opinion of the hull, so I decided to beach it and sit in as RD so that we could have a reduced extension of the day’s racing. The Spring series champion was decided at this last regatta with Dan Crowley topping Greg Vasileff by one point. On the other hand the day’s races belonged to Ron Rhault. He was very displeased with his setup at the last race, so he installed new sails and tried to retune them…with obvious good results. This again enforces the idea that the boat’s powerplant, the sails, are key to good performance. The results are shown below:

At the IOM regatta, Ron Rhault and I discussed the resolution of the tie between John Whalen and Ron Rhault at the last USOM regatta. It appears that the sailing rules apply and as a result breaking a tie leads to comparing the number of firsts, then seconds and so on. In the comparison the races discarded are not used in the comparison. As a result the position of Ron and John are reversed with John taking first and Ron second.
Note, next week’s IOM regatta on the 29th will be the first of the fall series, so everyone starts off even again. Rich
